  • 7.11.22 Yr1 visits the synagogue

    Thu 10 Nov 2022

We all had a really informative visit to Beth Shalom synagogue in Cambridge. Have a look at the photos to find out what we did and learnt.

Here's what we thought of the experience-

'I enjoyed learning about the Shabbat candle.'

    I liked undressing the Torah.'

'I remember the books open the other way.'

  • 3.11.22 Diwali Dance workshop - a wonderful RE and PE cross-curricular event

    Thu 10 Nov 2022

3 November 2022 Diwali Dance Workshop – a wonderful cross-curricular RE and PE event

On Thursday the 3rd of November, we had the ‘West End in Schools’ dance company visit Cherry Hinton. Each class from Reception to Year 6 were able to take part in a 35 minute workshop. The workshop started with the Ramayana story from Hinduism, an opportunity to enrich the children in the R.E part of our school curriculum. The Ramayana is the most well-known story behind Diwali. One of the most influential works in world literature, the great Hindu epic about Prince Rama and his wife Sita has been shared orally and through dance for centuries. The children were then able to dive into the P.E side of our school curriculum as the story was then re-told through a whole class dance performance. Retelling key elements of The Ramayana through dance improved the children's cultural understanding and their confidence in self-expression. Plus they were being active and working as a team whilst they learned to dance!

  • 21.10.22 Autumn 1 Topic homework festival

    Mon 31 Oct 2022

Here is a sample of the amazing homework that was on display in the hall on the day before half term. We had 'Make do and Mend' items made by Year 6 and inspired by their World War 2 topic. Year 5 had been looking at 'Why are rainforests important?' Year 2 were keen to create friendly places for the Lonely Beast to feel like staying in Cherry Hinton. Year 1 thought about 'Who am I? How have I changed?' and we had several family trees to display. Year 3 made some pots worthy of 'Who were the first Britons?'

Cherry Hinton was shortlisted for a School Games Award and has just been awarded a Bronze School Games Mark. Our daily ACT ACTIVE and related challenges have earnt us recognition.

  • Jubilee Celebrations

    Thu 28 Jul 2022

School celebrated on May 20th with a Best Crown competition, a tea of cucumber sandwiches, cake and squash and a whole school ACT ACTIVE session of the Lindy Hop, a dance popular at the time of the Queen's Coronation. The Eco-warriors also planted a new cherry tree, helped by Liam Wayne a former pupil at the school. He planted a cherry tree when he was at the school but it was blown down by the strong winds earlier this year. It was good to welcome him back.

We were also lucky to have a photographer from the Cambridge Independent come to school to record our event. We headlined the article in the paper outlining all Jubilee events in the region. And we had fun! Thank you to our Cherry Carers and Mrs Northfield for organising the celebrations.

  • Eco-Warrior action

    Thu 28 Jul 2022

The Eco-warriors have decided to try to tackle plastic waste in school. Each class was given a plastic bag to put their plastic waste in for a week, there was even a bag in the staffroom. At the end of the week they collected up all the waste. It seems the staff had the biggest bag.

As a result, Eco-warriors are now looking into how we could recycle crisp packets.

  • Our MP visits

    Thu 28 Jul 2022

On Friday 15th July, Daniel Zeichner Cambridge's MP visited year 5 as part of their 'Can I persuade you?' topic in which they learn about parliament. They put him through his paces with their questions. His comment at the end was that the quality and level of questions from Year 5 was really impressive. Some of the questions were:

    Are the green benches comfy?

Have you asked for a law which has changed Cambridge?

If you could pass one law what would it be?

Are there any ridiculous laws which should be removed?

    Is being an MP stressful?

What was your first day as an MP like?
