Computing Curriculum Statement
At Cherry Hinton Primary School, computing helps children understand and use technology safely, confidently and responsibly. We follow the National Curriculum for Computing for Key Stages 1 and 2.
Computing is an important part of children’s lives, both now and in the future. Our curriculum helps children learn how technology works, how it can help them in daily life, and how to use it wisely without letting it take over their lives. We want children to feel confident using technology, but also confident to switch it off.
The Computing curriculum has three main areas.
Computer Science
Children learn how computers work and how programs are created. They learn about algorithms (clear instructions), logic and problem-solving. From an early age, children create, test and fix simple programs. As they get older, they learn to write more complex programs, including using repetition, choices and variables. They use coding platforms such as Scratch. Children also practise “computational thinking”, which means breaking problems into smaller steps, even when they are not using a computer.
Information Technology
Children use technology to create, organise and present their work. They learn how to use different software and devices for different purposes, such as writing, drawing, presenting information, collecting data and researching safely online. Computing is often linked with other subjects so children can use technology to support their learning across the curriculum. Children are taught how to choose the right tools and how to use new or unfamiliar technology confidently.
Digital Literacy and Online Safety
Keeping children safe is a key part of our computing curriculum. Children are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly. They learn how to keep personal information private, how to behave appropriately online, and what to do if they are worried or uncomfortable. We help children question and think carefully about what they see, hear or read online, including understanding that not everything on the internet is true. We also teach children that technology should support their lives, not control them.
By the time children leave Cherry Hinton Primary School, they are confident and capable users of technology. They can use computing to solve problems, be creative and communicate ideas. They understand how technology can help them in everyday life and learning, and they know how to stay safe and make sensible choices online.
