At Cherry Hinton, we believe Physical Education (PE) is an important part of every child’s learning and wellbeing. Through PE, children develop confidence, physical skills and a positive attitude towards being active and healthy.
We encourage children to be inspired, inquisitive and kind learners. PE helps children to enjoy movement, ask questions, try new activities and support one another.
Our school values are Agape, Courage and Thankfulness (A.C.T.) and these are central to PE lessons and sporting activities:
Agape – showing kindness, respect and care for others
Courage – trying new sports, taking risks and not giving up
Thankfulness – appreciating opportunities, equipment and teammates
We want all children to compete with a have-a-go attitude. We want them to be fit and have personal goals. We hope they will find a sport they enjoy through positive experiences whilst learning skills from varying sports. We want them to know how PE links to their own well-being.
PE is taught weekly by class teachers and follows the National Curriculum. Lessons are planned so that skills develop progressively as children move through school. Children take part in a wide range of sports and physical activities to enhance learning and enjoyment.
Every afternoon, the whole school takes part in ACT Active, where children and adults walk, jog or run the Daily Mile for 15 minutes. Once a half-term, ACT Active also takes place before school, with families invited to join us.
Children are encouraged to take part in friendly intra-house competitions. All children participate in Sports Day, competing in a fun, inclusive and supportive environment.
We also promote the Spirit of the Games values: teamwork, respect, honesty, determination, passion and self-belief. Children are awarded house points for demonstrating these values in PE lessons, ACT Active and competitions.
Through our partnership with the Cambridge School Sports Partnership, children have opportunities to meet inspiring athletes, try new sports and compete in local school events and competitions. Playtimes are active, with equipment available.
Children in Key Stage 2 also take part in swimming lessons, working towards swimming at least 25 metres confidently and safely.
We also take part in the Bikeability scheme across the school.
Sporting achievements are celebrated in weekly assemblies, including a Sporting Hero award. This recognises effort, teamwork, resilience and kindness, helping children to feel proud of their achievements.
Through PE, Cherry Hinton pupils develop healthy habits, confidence and a love of physical activity that supports them now and in the future.
