ART Curriculum statement – intent, implementation, impact
Art is the oxygen that makes all other subjects breathe
Alan Parker
Our art curriculum is inspired by AccessArt, placing creativity, curiosity, and pupil voice at its heart. Children are encouraged to explore materials, techniques, and ideas through a rich balance of drawing, painting, sculpture, printmaking, and mixed media. Learning is structured as a journey of discovery, where pupils build skills gradually while developing confidence to experiment, take creative risks, and express their own ideas. Artists, designers, and craftspeople from diverse backgrounds are used as inspiration, helping pupils to understand that art is both a personal and cultural form of communication.
Our art learning is inclusive, process-led, and reflective. Pupils are taught to think like artists: observing carefully, making connections, revisiting ideas, and evaluating their own work and that of others. Sketchbooks are used as a safe space for exploration and growth rather than perfection, supporting resilience and independence. By the time pupils leave our school, they have not only developed strong practical skills but also a deeper appreciation of creativity, visual literacy, and the role of art in the wider world.
Art includes enrichment activities such as trips to the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge. We also hold and annual Creative Arts Week. This is an opportunity for the whole school to embrace a project for an entire week, culminating in an inspiring exhibition of the art we have produced.
