Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHE) Curriculum Statement

Personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) education is an important and necessary part of all pupils’ education.  

At Cherry Hinton, our PSHE curriculum helps children to be happy, healthy and safe. We support children to feel passionate and empowered about their feelings and opinions, while also understanding how to live together with tolerance and in peace.  They will understand how to look after their body, mind and feelings, and learn how to get along well with others.

The teaching of PSHE is also linked to our school values:

• Agape – showing love, care and respect
• Courage – being brave, trying new things and speaking up
• Thankfulness – being grateful and kind

These values are a key part of everyday school life.

We believe every child is important. We take time to know, understand and respect each child in our diverse school community. We want all children to feel safe, valued and confident in a warm and trusting school.

Through PSHE, children become inspired, inquisitive and kind learners. They develop the confidence to ask questions, care for others and enjoy learning. We help children to grow further in their love of learning and to develop the skills, knowledge and kindness to make good choices and help the world around them.

Our PSHE and Citizenship programme (which is covered through the taught curriculum and our wider provision) includes teaching and learning from the Cambridgeshire Scheme of Work.  In particular, we study the following areas and themes:

• Myself and My Relationships: including My Emotions, Beginning and Belonging, Anti-bullying, Family and Friends and Managing Change.
• Healthy and Safer Lifestyles: including Personal Safety, Digital Lifestyles, Drug Education, Relationships and Sex Education, Healthy Lifestyles and Managing Safety and Risk (including Road Safety).
• Economic Wellbeing: including Financial Capability
• Citizenship: including Diversity and Communities, Rights, Rules and Responsibilities and Working Together.
• Enrichment: Anti-bullying, Internet safety, Collective Worship

The delivery of these units helps children understand themselves and others, build positive relationships and grow into caring, confident and responsible people.

 

The whole staff and children work together in partnership to maintain a stimulating and nurturing environment. As described in the school’s last Ofsted report;

Pupil’s social and emotional needs are met very well because of all the wide-range of provision leaders have in place.

Pupil’s behave extremely well in lessons and around school. Their behaviour reflects the school’s values of ACT.
