Understanding the World (UW) is one of the four specific areas of learning in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS). It guides children to make sense of their physical world and community through hands-on exploration, sensory experiences, and firsthand observation.
The curriculum is divided into three core aspects: Past and Present, People, Culture and Communities, and The Natural World.
Past and Present
This aspect focuses on helping children understand the passage of time and chronology. Children learn about their own life stories, their family history, and begin to distinguish between the past and present by comparing how people lived long ago to how they live today.
Key EYFS Focus: Exploring stories, non-fiction texts, and characters to understand historical settings and events.
People, Culture and Communities
Children are guided to understand their place in society and appreciate the diversity of the world around them. This includes talking about their immediate family, community members (like doctors or police officers), and understanding different religious, cultural, and personal beliefs.
Key EYFS Focus: Discussing special times/celebrations and recognizing similarities and differences between themselves and people in other countries.
The Natural World
Children are encouraged to explore their environment through outdoor play and sensory investigation. They learn about the changing seasons, observe plants and animal lifecycles, and discover the importance of respecting and caring for the environment.
Key EYFS Focus: Hands-on science experiments, nature walks, and sensory explorations of natural materials.
