Geography

Geography Curriculum Statement

Our School Values are: Agape Courage Thankfulness

Our school motto is: Inquisitive Thinkers; Inspired Learners; Kind Hearts

At Cherry Hinton, geography helps children understand the world and the people who live in it. Motivated by our school values, we want pupils to develop strong knowledge, skills and understanding of places, environments and cultures. Questions such as 'What is Europe like? How do I find my way?' and 'What makes our Earth extreme?', encourage the children to ask big questions about the world, think critically, and imagine how they can make a positive impact on both human and physical geography. This supports them in becoming responsible, caring citizens who care for the environment and all people.

Curriculum

Geography is taught through a clear, progressive curriculum that builds knowledge and skills over time. Each topic focuses on a key question and important vocabulary, supported by knowledge organisers and pre- and post-learning challenges. Lessons help children develop enquiry, map and fieldwork skills as well as critical thinking.

By the time children leave our school, they have strong geographical knowledge and skills. They understand the importance of caring for the environment and the people around them, and they can explain how living out our school values of agape, courage and thankfulness makes a difference to themselves, their community, and the wider world. Children explore topic questions such as 'What are rainforests so important?' and 'What is it like in the Arctic?'. Within these questions they ask their own deep questions and take action as active citizens, for example, raising awareness of environmental and climate issues.

Enrichment

Learning is enriched through visits within our school grounds, the local area such as the Chalk Pits, Cambridge, and beyond, giving children hands-on experiences that make geography engaging and meaningful.
