This term our topics are: 

• Fluent addition and subtraction within 20.
• Place value to 100.
• Addition and subtraction within 100.

Here is a table of addition and subtraction facts we will be working on this year.

Please note that the subtraction facts are the inverse of the addition facts. We encourage children to think about addition facts they know to help them with subtraction.

By the end of year 2, we expect children to be fluent with these facts (they can calculate them in a few seconds, in their heads). We will look at different strategies to support this:

• Commutativity of facts e.g. 5+2=2+5
• Composition of numbers to 5 e.g. 5 is made of 3 and 2, so 3+2=5
• Doubles and near doubles
• 'Five and a bit'
• Adding 1
• Adding 2 (next odd or even number)
• Bonds to 10
• 10 and a bit
• Bridging through 10
